5th grade blog post
February is a great
month to take the time to reflect on our friendships and the positivity they
bring to our lives. For Valentine’s Day, we spent time writing
individualized compliments on paper bags and used these to house our
Valentines. Students loved reading positive messages their peers notice about
them as classmates and friends.
We have also been taking
advantage of the few sunny February days by reading outside, and working on our
novel studies and book clubs. Two of our classes our reading Among the
Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix and Tuck Everlasting by Natalie
Babbitt, and enjoying getting lost in these books! They have debated about
tough questions such as “Why we would, or would not, choose eternal life?”. One
of the biggest questions and topics of
conversation in Among the Hidden is
around our rights, freedoms, and liberties we have as citizens in a country.
Our students have been blown away at the challenges that Luke and Jen’s family
face, and the control that their government has.
We are looking forward
to meeting children’s book author, Jennifer Elvgren, in March and our trip to
the Smithsonian Museums in April!
