work they're doing:
Second Grade engineers and architects engaged in creative, collaborative problem
solving as they completed a design project based on the book The Three Billy Goats
Gruff. After reading and learning how to summarize, the students were challenged to
build a bridge out of gum drops, popsicle sticks, and toothpicks. The bridge had to hold
all three “Billy Goats” (connecting cubes) so they could avoid that mean Troll and get
to the green grass safely. Working in pairs, students made a plan, built, and revised.
Some students challenged themselves to build higher or stronger bridges capable
of holding different sized Billy Goats, like in the book. After the bridges were built,
students concluded with a gallery walk to see each other’s work. Many compliments
were shared by peers over the different design ideas!
