Art students inspired by Chihuly

After viewing the art of glass blowing artist Dale Chihuly, Kindergarten though fifth graders worked together to create their own glass inspired installation piece.  To begin the project the students watched a brief video that gave an overview of the glass making process and teamwork involved in the production of Chihuly’s art.  Second through fifth graders used plastic, wire and colored sharpies to create their own organic shaped glass pieces. Kindergarten and first graders used sharpies and household products to create a glass inspired look.  The artwork was used to create an instillation piece, which is on display by the library in the front lobby. This piece contains the work of over 400 students' art. Come check it out!

Learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Kindergarten

When we learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. in Kindergarten, we use it as an opportunity to celebrate how each of us is different. We talk about his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and then try to have the students relate this to their lives. They create a "dream" for themselves, their family, and then the world in general. We try to have them think about themselves as active participants in their world and the change they can create. To finish the project, students spend time looking in the mirror and drawing a realistic self portrait to accompany their writing, further demonstrating that no two students are exactly alike. Here is a picture of some of our students' drawings that you can see on walls in the Kindergarten hallway.
